The subject line
The Message column on the Email row is the subject, up to 500 characters. {title}, {url} and {site} work in it, so Question about {title} tells you which page the visitor was on. Try an address and a subject:
Build the link and see what the plugin saves
Pick a channel, paste a number, a name or an address, and see exactly what Beckonbird would save and which link it would draw. Nothing you type leaves this page.
What the plugin checks
The address has to be one WordPress accepts as an email address, and what is saved is exactly what you typed (the word mailto and its colon in front, if you pasted a link, are taken off). Nothing is repaired, because a repaired address can be somebody else’s. A mistake such as a missing @ is refused, with your old address kept, and so is an address with a letter like ø, å or é in it: the link cannot carry those.
It opens a mail program, not a form
The visitor needs a mail program or webmail set up to handle email links. For people who use a webmail site in the browser without having told the computer so, a link like this may do nothing. For them a short form on a contact page is the better route, and you can put that page’s address in the button as Your own link beside the Email line.
On every page, or not
The button shows on the whole site unless you say otherwise on the Display tab. Showing it only on selected pages and hiding it on a few are both one choice there.
